How We Categorize Your Transactions

Next Move Money automatically categorizes your transactions to help you understand your spending. Here's how it works.

Automatic Categorization

When you upload transactions, our system analyzes each one and assigns it to a category based on:

  • Merchant name - We recognize thousands of common merchants
  • Transaction description - Keywords help identify the type of purchase
  • Amount patterns - Similar amounts to known categories
  • Historical data - How you've categorized similar transactions before

Our Categories

  • Housing (rent, mortgage)
  • Utilities (electric, gas, water)
  • Insurance (auto, health, home)
  • Transportation (gas, transit)

Improving Accuracy

You can help us categorize better by:

  1. Reviewing suggestions - Confirm or correct our guesses
  2. Setting merchant rules - "Always categorize Amazon as Shopping"
  3. Adding notes - Context helps future categorization
  4. Recategorizing Transactions

    To change a transaction's category:

    1. Go to the Spending page
    2. Click on any transaction
    3. Select a new category
    4. Save
    5. Your choice will be remembered for similar future transactions.
